Email interview with Aubrey Nunn:
Thanks for taking the time to do this for me
The upcoming album:
What part did you have in it?
Very little myself, this was an album that was ever so slightly more poppy but at the same time almost exclusively electronic. I did however end up with a writing credit on the track No Roots as this was conceived a long time ago when we were looking for new ways of arranging Dirty Old Man for the stage. As ever I will be part of the live band so I suppose you could say that my role is more one of promoting the album than making it.
What is your favourite track on the album?
In The End gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Maxi and LSK have a fantastic positive and negative angle on the lyric which literally makes me want to weep. I've gone to bed recently and had the"..probably fall in love and never trust anybody again" lyric going round my head for hours. Mass Destruction strikes me as being probably the most important political statement we have ever made without delving too far into party politics. I am glad that its receiving so much popular attention and even being played by the BBC who are mentioned maybe not too favourably in the lyric.
What is different about this album from the previous?
LSK brings a totally new angle to things. He raps, he sings and is the most musically knowledgeable person I have met in years. There are more songs on the album, and it flows differently inasmuch as the music itself is self sufficient even without lyrics. i think Rollo intends to eventually a music only version of the album so you can judge for yourself whether what I am saying is true or not.
The title 'No roots' who's idea was it and what's the story behind it?
Good question. Not me and if there is a story I don't know it ! I think its fairly obvious what is being got at.
'Mass Destruction' seems a very political title, although the lyrics are universal. Any views about this?
Some of us have been involved with anti-war charities over the last couple of years, and this is an extension of that. I would disagree that it is overly political, it just seems that way in a world of musical slush. The message is less politics and more no war. We certainly don't align ourselves to any political party or movement.
What is LSK like to work with?
Fantastic. The man is so talented, and a thoroughly good bloke on the road. Whenever I get a knock on my hotel room door I know it's him asking if I fancy a cheeky beer in the bar. He has slotted in to our little band so well, and I love seeing him and Maxi vibeing with each other. I'm sure you can tell I like him a lot.
Any stories about the making of the album?
I can tell you that when LSK got a phone call from Rollo who had heard his album and wanted to get him down to London to do some recording and writing with us he was convinced that it was one of his friends teasing him and almost put the phone down. I think we are all very glad he didn't.
Festivals/live events
Looks like its going to be another busy season, what festival are you most looking forward too?
I can't really single one out, although I would have to say that
anything we do in the UK does have a special significance. We were much better known in Europe for a long time and now that the UK has caught up it feels like we have just about arrived. I love it when my mum is in the audience and my mates are all watching on TV. The calls you get after the show make you feel loved and supported which is what I crave.
Which track(s) do you most enjoy playing or listening to live?
Its always great to arrange new stuff and present something which is not necessarily obvious. That said, I could play Insomnia all night and not get bored. Of the new stuff I love the two halves of I Want More.
What other artist(s) are you looking forward too seeing?
I want to see if The Strokes and Kings of Leon are as good every one believes. Also its been along time since I have seen Dido and it would be great to catch up with her and her band all of whom are good friends.
Your career
What does the future hold for Aubrey Nunn?
I like to vary it. I did some writing for Dido's last album and write with several other people. I would like to think that at some point I will put together a project and have met some great people that I would love to be involved. I am also quite heavily involved with the management of Faithless and also education and music charities. Combine all of this and I am busy whatever happens.
Any plans for working with other artists?
Lots, but nothing mentionable yet. I think it would be great if some of the lesser known members of the band put something together.
Any plans for a solo career?
Not me personally, but as mentioned, I would like to put a project together after Faithless. It would be silly to learn so much and not pass it on. I can see myself having enough of the music business but I cannot imagine for a minute that I would not want to be involved with music performance of one kind or another.
Other stuff
Favourite foods etc.
The band loves brown rice, but always get pizza instead. I love wine, and myself and Sudha are the band's wine snobs. We all share a bottle of champagne to get us in the mood before we go onstage.
Again thanks for doing this for me
